Brief Summary of Unit: This unit will introduce the health related components of fitness through a series of lessons that are specifically designed to cover each of the components. This will be accomplished through the use of powerpoint presentations, digital camera, spreadsheets, heart rate monitors, and physical activities. The goal for this unit is develop an understanding of how important each of the components of fitness is to leading a healthy lifestyle. The students will be assessed on each component and develop a fitness program that will help them maintain a healthy lifestyle and improve on areas of weakness. |
Students will Understand: The students will learn the four components of fitness and how important each
component is to achieving a
healthy lifestyle. |
Essential Questions to Guide this Unit and
Focus Teaching and Learning: What are the components of fitness? Why is each component important when developing a fitness program? How do you calculate your resting, maximum and target heart rates? What are the benefits of using heart rate monitors while exercising? Why is the assessment of fitness levels important. How can they help determine what fitness goals a person should set. |
Key Knowledge and Skills Students will Acquire: Students will explain the different components of fitness and how each component is important to achieving an optimal fitness level. Students will compare their personal fitness assessments to the national norms. Students will be able to calculate resting, maximum and target heart rates. Students will demonstrate the proper use of heart rate monitors when evaluating exercise heart rate. Students will develop muscular strength and endurance weightlifting programs. Students will develop an overall fitness plan that will help them maintain and improve areas of weakness. Students will be able to explain the F.I.T.T. principle. |
Assessment Plan: Powerpoint presentation guided notes Resting heart rate worksheet Target heart rate worksheet Exercise heart rate spreadsheet Muscular strength/endurance group project Fitness Portfolio- (rubric sheet) Group Project Fitness Test Evaluate personal fitness levels and write goals for improving each area.
|
Learning Activities: Students will take guided notes over the powerpoint presentation that will introduce the fitness unit. They will be using this information later when developing the group fitness portfolio. Each component will be broken down into individual lessons. Cardiorespiratory endurance will include calculating the different heart rates and the use of heart rate monitors. The students will do a circuit training lesson to see how the heart rate levels vary for different activities. They will also understand how to maintain a healthy level of cardiovascular level of exercise. During the muscular strength and endurance lessons the students will be developing a weightlifting handbook that includes muscular strength and endurance lifts. They will use digital cameras to take pictures of the start, middle and ending positions of each lift. After getting the pictures they will research the proper lifting techniques for the assigned lifts and put together a book that includes the picture and how to correctly perform the lift. The body composition lesson will discuss the different types of body fat assessment and the advantages and disadvantages of each. The students will analyze the importance of flexibility in everyday life as well as fitness activities. They will be able to explain which sports require more or less flexibility. Each lesson will be followed up with personal fitness assessments. The last few lessons will be analyzing personal fitness levels, setting goals and developing a group fitness portfolio.
|
Day 1: Introduce the components of fitness by powerpoint presentation. Students will be given guided notes to follow along with the presentation. Homework assignment - resting heart rate worksheet. Click here for PPT |
Day 2: Review resting heart rate worksheet. Help any students who had problems taking heart rate at home. Introduce maximum and target heart rate. Complete target heart rate worksheet. Introduce heart rate monitors: how to use, discuss advantages and disadvantages. Activity: fitness stations will be set up around the gym. The students will perform each station for 30 seconds. After each station the students will take their heart rate for 6 seconds and record on their heart rate log sheet. Discuss results at the end of class. |
Day 3: Review maximum and target heart rate from day 2. Introduce recovery heart rate. The students will be split into groups(2-3 per group) for today's activity. Each group will be provided with a recovery heart rate worksheet, stop watch and choice of equipment. Each student needs to complete the activity. Each students needs to write a short summary about their recovery heart rate and how it relates to their overall fitness level. |
Day 4: Fitness assessment- We will be assessing the cardiovascular levels (fitnessgram) of the students today. They will not be graded for the activity. This information will be used to help the students see where they rank for cardiovascular fitness. The students will use this information when setting their fitness goals. |
Day 5: Today we will be going to the weightroom to introduce muscular strength and endurance. The students will be divided into groups of 2-3 for this activity. The group assignment will consist of developing a weightlifting reference book. Each group will be assigned 3-4 different lifts and they will be assigned to develop either muscular strength or muscular endurance. They will use digital camera's to take pictures of the before, middle and ending pose for each lift. When this is complete they will go on to the writing portion of this assignment in the computer lab. |
Day 6: Finish up
any pictures that need to be taken. When all pictures are taken the
students will start to research and write up the How to Perform section of
the reference book. Once they have all their information they will
develop a page for each lift that has the picture and write up of how to
correctly perform the lift. The write up will also include tips for
developing muscular strength or muscular endurance using that specific lift.
|
Day 7: Today will be a continuation and work day from lesson 6. |
Day 8: Finish up projects, peer edit, and group presentation of projects! Put reference book together. |
Day 9: Fitness assessment over muscular strength and endurance. Write goals for each area. |
Day 10: Introduce flexibility and review powerpoint information over the types of stretching and how they can help increase a persons flexibility. Set up stations that cover each of the different types of stretching methods. Have the students compare the different types and discuss which one would be the most beneficial for their personal fitness program. Flexibility assessment: Sit-n-Reach |
Day 11: Review body composition that was covered in the powerpoint presentation. Discuss the different methods and their advantages/disadvantages for measuring body composition. The students will have the option to measure their body composition this will not be a requirement. The students will find an article on improving body composition. They will write a review about the information and give their own thoughts and opinions. |
Day 12: Today we are going to review all the components of fitness. Students will take a written test on day 14. The students are going to take the goals they have set and make a spreadsheet that will help them to keep track of their physical activity on a daily basis. I will provide them with an example format so they have an idea of what needs to be included on the spreadsheet. |
Day 13: Students will be given group project on developing a fitness program that covers all the components of fitness. They will have a rubric that covers the project requirements and grading procedure. The group will be given one class period to work on this project the rest must be completed on their own time. Since the students meet every other day for 90 minutes they will have four days to complete the assignment. It will be due on day 15. To hold all members of the group accountable they will be self-grading and peer grading each other on project participation. |
Day 14: Take test over Components of fitness. |
Day 15: Projects due!! Peer and self-grading! |
